Moresby Explorers

A highlight of any trip to the islands is a visit to Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, which encompasses the southern part of Moresby Island. We offer tours to Gwaii Haanas in partnership with Moresby Explorers, a local company that has a great reputation for fun and educational boat tours. These tours travel in open Zodiac boats. This method of travel is a great way to experience nature up close and explore the remote wilderness of Gwaii Haanas. We visit ancient Haida village sites, walk in giant old growth forest, view wildlife, and learn about the culture and history of the islands.
Before you decide to travel on an open boat, you should be aware that the weather here is often wet and cold. We provide raingear, waterproof boots, and lifejackets, but it is important to wear lots of warm clothing underneath. The ride can be bumpy at times, so please be sure to mention any back trouble or health concerns when you are booking your tour.
Lunch is provided on these tours, so if you have any food allergies or diet concerns, be sure to tell us well in advance. All tours start with a one-hour drive from Sandspit to Moresby Camp Recreation Site, with a stop to pick up guests who are coming across from Graham Island on the ferry. If you are staying the night before in Masset, you will need to get up early to catch the 7:30 ferry from Graham Island to the Sandspit side. However, you don't need to bring a car on the ferry, as Moresby Explorers will pick you up at the ferry landing on the Sandspit side. At Moresby Camp, we launch the Zodiac and set off for a day of exploring.

Louise Island Day Tour
This one day tour is a full circumnavigation around Louise Island, the third biggest island on the Queen Charlotte Islands. We incorporate a number of stops along the way, filling out our day with a mix of Haida cultural history, logging history, natural history and as much wildlife as we can find. The main stop on this tour is the Haida village site of Skedans. Skedans was one of the larger Haida villages in the southern portion of the islands and was abandoned in the 1880s. What is left now are a few old totem poles and some house remains. Your guide will walk you through the site, explaining what the village once looked like, what the figures on the poles are, and how the people lived.
Because of weather, tides and different interests among guests, we prefer to leave our other stops up to the guide. On your tour, you might see some of: Abandoned logging camps, intertidal life, marine mammals, sea birds, moss covered forests, and giant trees.
If there is something in particular you are interested in learning about, or something you really want to see, let your guide know and they will do their best to incorporate it into the tour. We provide a lunch so if you have any dietary concerns (for example: food allergies, food preferences, or if you are a vegetarian), please let us know ahead of time.
This tour requires a reasonable level of health and fitness. You must be able to walk on an uneven beach and get in and out of the boat (the guide will show you how). We try to keep the ride as smooth as possible, but it can be bouncy, so please let us know if you have any back or neck trouble, if you are pregnant, or for any other reason shouldn't be bounced around.

How you should dress:
Because we use open boats it can be very cold and sometimes wet. You should wear warm, layered clothing, preferably synthetic (like fleece) or wool, and if possible avoid cotton as it is very cold when wet. We suggest you bring all the warm clothing you have as you can always leave some in the van if your guide thinks you have too much. You should also bring a warm hat, sunglasses and gloves. You may bring your own raingear, but we also provide heavy raingear and gumboots for everyone.

Warm Hat

Hotsprings Day Tour
Join us for a soak in one of the nicest natural Hotsprings in Canada. Hotspring Island is a very small island about half way down the east side of Moresby Island. There are three natural hot pools, overlooking Juan Perez Sound, which is a great place to look for marine wildlife while you soak. One of the pools is on a gravel beach where you can take a dip in the ocean, quickly jumping back into the hot pool.
Because of the distance to the island, the Hotsprings Day Tour is a fairly long day, but if time allows, we still may have time for one other short stop on the tour. We leave this stop up to the discretion of the guide.
We provide a lunch so if you have any dietary concerns (for example: food allergies, food preferences, or if you are a vegetarian), please let us know ahead of time.
